Concordia in quiz bowl championship

Concordia College’s quiz bowl team is headed to the Honda Campus All-Star Challenge National Championship Tournament.
The team will be traveling to Los Angeles, Calif. Saturday to compete in the Honda Campus All-Star Challenge National Championship Tournament for the chance to eventually receive up to $15,000 in grant money and the champion title.
“We’re grateful that a Honda Campus All-Star Challenge competition has given us this opportunity,” Dr. Chinwe Okeke, a biology professor and head adviser of the team, said. “We hope to make Concordia College, Alabama and the city of Selma proud.”
The group was one of 61 teams to compete at the regional level. After the regional contest Alabama State University, the quiz bowl team was selected to proceed at the national championship tournament as a part of the “great 48.”
The Honda Campus All-Star Challenge National Championship, which is conducted Saturday through Wednesday, consists of multiples rounds that end with an ultimate winner.
Glenn King, Jr., a business professor and co-advisor of the team, said the students have worked tremendously hard and their very deserving of trip.
“They put in long hours and sleepless nights,” King said. “They have just earned their reward for their hard work and sacrifice, so it means a lot that this is our first year every participating and we are making it to the national competition.”
Jene Matthews said the team is would be happy to win the grant money and champion title, but the most important thing is to send a message of accomplishment to the public.
“I think we all want to win to put our school on the map and let everybody know there are bright students here at Concordia College, and you can make everything happen down here in Selma,” Matthews said.
King said he is confident the team will put on a performance that will make the Selma community proud.
The team includes the following students students: Avonne Rice, Sherman Williams, Jene Matthews, Kendrick Wright and Taxeon Chatora.
