VALLEY GRANDE — During their meeting Monday evening, the Valley Grande City council donated $24,000 to the Summerfield Volunteer Fire Department to be put toward the acquisition of a new brush truck.
Mayor Wayne Labbe said the council heard a presentation from Summerfield Fire Chief Kevin Box Monday, who talked about the need for the new truck.
“[Kevin] has been using this old brush truck for too long, and it’s something that was really needed, because between Potter Station VFD, Summerfield VFD and the Valley Grand Fire Department, they share equipment,” Labbe said. “So, if there is a call that requires brush truck, they go, and it needed upgrading and that’s our job to keep our fire department’s up to date for the people in Valley Grande.”
The council approved a $4,590 bid from Morrow Ornamental to construct a new fence at the Valley Grande Sports Complex.
Labbe said the company would install a new 6-foot fence around the perimeter of the park, and an 8-foot fence around the park’s electric box.
“The new fences are not only for safety but also for security,” Labbe said. “It will allow us to have better control over the park.”
The council also continued talks on the payment of a note the city currently owes to Marion Bank & Trust worth $140,000.
“We’ve decided that our intention is to pay the $140,000 off of that note before we are out of office in about two-and-a-half years,” Labbe said. “We want the city to be completely out of debt by then.”
