Selma returned to the softball diamond Monday after a week off for spring break, and after their 17-0 defeat to Jeff Davis the Lady Saints may be wishing for another vacation.

“I probably shouldn’t have scheduled the game for this Monday but this was a makeup day and we just came to play it and see how things went,” Selma head coach Mark Fedora said. “With the adversity and things we’ve had, we just weren’t ready to play.”

Jeff Davis pitcher Kaylin Finch pitched a three-inning no hitter as the Volunteers dominated the Saints.

“This young girl for Jeff Davis, [Finch] , she’s an excellent pitcher,” Fedor said. “I don’t see us facing anybody as good as her all year. She’s the best we will see.”

With Jeff Davis already up 6-0 in the first inning, Ayanna Ellis singled to score Sommer Fitzpatrick to extend Selma’s lead to seven.

The rout was just getting started though.

In the bottom of the second inning, Jamaica Flowers and Fitzpatrick singled to score runs to give Jeff Davis a 9-0 advantage.

With the Volunteers up 10-0 and the bases loaded, Finch helped her own cause by hitting a ball deep into centerfield — beyond the reach of the Saints’ outfielders.

Two poor throws on the play by Selma resulted in all four Volunteers’ scoring, including Finch, to give Jeff Davis a 14-0 advantage. Lavarsha Thigpen added another run on a passed ball to give the Volunteers a 15-0 lead after two innings.

Jeff Davis added two more runs in the top of the third and the Volunteers ended the inning by having a runner jump off base early.

“The main thing is we have the concentrate,” Fedor said.

“Even though Jeff Davis is an excellent team we still made some mental errors. We just weren’t thinking about playing.”

Five of the final six Lady Saints’ batters struck out and Finch finished with seven total strikeouts.

Selma’s next game is at Dallas County Tuesday.
