People looking to enjoy a high-quality meal and a glass of green beer on St. Patrick’s Day, will also have the chance help raise money for the Dallas County chapter of the Alabama Court Appointed Special Advocates Network.
The fundraiser will take place at Selma’s Tally-Ho Restaurant, 509 Magnum Ave., from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. on Monday, March 17, and co-owner Paul Wilkerson said the establishment has hosted a St. Patrick’s Day fundraiser for various local charities and organizations for the last few decades.
“When the tradition started, the money went to the March of Dimes for the first 10 or 15 years,” Wilkerson said. “But now we pick a different group every year. This is an event we all really look forward to every year, because there are so many great local groups that are doing great work with the money they raise here.”
Wilkerson said the event would feature $1 raffle tickets, which would be entered into a drawing every 15 or 20 minutes.
Wilkerson said he predicts this year’s St. Patrick’s Day fundraiser will draw the same large crowd that has become a welcome part of the annual tradition.
“Normally, Selma comes out to support this event,” Wilkerson said. “You could almost compare this day to New Years Eve or Valentine’s Day.”
One of the people who has seen firsthand the work of CASA is District Judge Bob Armstrong.
“It’s a great thing that CASA was picked to benefit from this event,” Armstrong said. “The work that CASA does helps children involved in the most difficult and dysfunctional cases I deal with in court. The people at CASA are one more person who cares about the children involved in these cases and are willing to go the extra mile to help them with counseling, tutoring, or anything else they might need.”
CASA programs assist the juvenile or family courts throughout Alabama in carrying out their role in the child services protective services system.
