Mabel was the daughter of the late Andrew Harrison Johnson and Ida Belle Gregg Johnson of Monroeville, Alabama. She grew up in Franklin, Alabama and as a child enjoyed frequent visits with family in the Mobile and Point Clear areas. After graduation from high school, Mabel attended Montevallo College for Women and graduated with a degree in Business. On March 26, 1938, she married George Swift Voltz of Selma and resided in Selma for more than five decades.
Mabel’s life was centered around raising and nurturing her family and assisting her husband in their family wholesale hardware business. She was active in many social and civic endeavors including the Selma Charity League, Pandora women’s club, and the First Presbyterian Church of Selma. She always enjoyed sitting on the porch at the Selma Country Club watching the golfers come up to the eighteenth green. Later in life, she enjoyed volunteering in the office of the First Presbyterian Church of Selma and dividing her time between Selma and their cottage at Laguna Beach, Florida. Mabel was an avid outdoors woman and was accomplished in boating and speckled trout fishing in her center-console Boston Whaler, appropriately named “The Mabel.” After the death of her husband, George, in 1988, she later moved to Tuscaloosa to be close to her son Jim and his family and continued to enjoy time on the water at Lake Tuscaloosa. She also enjoyed visiting with her son George’s family in Columbus, GA and in the mountains of Blowing Rock, NC.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband of fifty years, George Swift Voltz, her three brothers, Andrew Harrison Johnson, Jr. (Dot) of Mobile, Strother Gregg Johnson (Hilda) of Hybart, and Arthur Leslie Johnson (Ann Laurie) of Camden, and a sister, Ida Belle Johnson Woolley (W.G.) of Selma.
Mabel is survived by her sons Dr. George Swift Voltz, Jr. (Georgene) of Columbus, GA and James W.
