Selma is preparing to expand its recycling program.
The city council’s recycling committee will meet Monday at 2 p.m. in the council chamber to discuss purchasing new recycling equipment with a $57,853 grant from the Alabama Department of Environmental Management.
Committee chairwoman and Selma City Councilwoman Susan Keith said the grant would primarily be used to purchase additional recycling bins and recycling stations.
“A week doesn’t go by that I don’t hear complaints about the bins overflowing,” Keith said. “Selma is so far behind most cities in recycling and we’re trying to catch up.”
The city has several recycling bins placed around the city, but Keith said she wants to increase the number of locations to improve the cleanliness of the city.
In addition to purchasing new equipment, she said the committee would discuss purchasing cameras to place near the bins to ensure people are recycling properly and not dropping off materials that cannot be recycled.
