While holiday shopping may just seem like a fun and innocent time for all, some perceive it to be the perfect time to take advantage of innocent holiday shoppers.

In an attempt to prevent Alabamian shoppers from becoming one of the many victims of theft and scams, the Mont. Attorney General Luther Strange issued a consumer alert Dec. 9 filled with safe holiday shopping tips.

Developed by Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Section, the tips are helpful for both in-store and online shoppers.

“Identify thieves and scammers prey on innocent consumers during the holiday season, protect yourself,” the Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Section stated in the press release. “If you feel at any time that you are not safe, call 911. Report any suspicious activity to your local law enforcement.”

The dangers of shopping are even lurking while shoppers are traveling back and forth to each store.

“Never travel with a purse or wallet lying on your seat,” the Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Section stated in the press release. “It takes less than 10 seconds at a red light for someone to break your window and take your belongings.”

For those that plan on avoiding the crowd with some online shopping, scams are a big threat.

According to the press release, people purchasing items online should shop from familiar, reputable online sites, never respond to pop up ads and make sure the website is secure before entering personal information.

“If possible, use a credit card versus a debit card when shopping online,” the Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Section said in the press release. “ Consumers can dispute charges with their credit card company, but using a debit card can give scammers direct access to the consumer’s bank account.”
