A woman was killed Monday in a one-vehicle accident near the intersection of Summerfield Road and Pardue Drive, two miles north of Selma.
Maria Del Refugio Saavedra Hernandez-Ayala, 37, was pronounced dead on the scene after her red, Chevrolet Blazer ran off of Summerfield Road and struck a tree. A child, sitting on the rear, passenger side of the car with Hernandez-Ayala, sustained minor injuries and was transported to Vaughan Regional Medical Center, according to Dallas County Coroner William Dailey.
Nick Horne, who lives just off of Summerfield Road, said he arrived on the scene shortly after the accident while on his way to work.
He said the car was driving south on Summerfield Road, toward Selma.
“I got there maybe ten minutes after it happened; the ambulance hadn’t arrived yet,” Horne said. “It looked like she had hydroplaned and ran off of a bridge just down the road from where I lived.”
As a father, he said the scene was difficult to deal with.
“They had to cut the woman out of the car and they kicked the window in to get the child,” Horne said. “I have seen a lot in life, but being a husband and being a father, it hits you a lot harder. That’s one boy that’s now without a mother.”
