Two weeks after the annual program kicked off in front of the Selma-Dallas County Public Library, the Salvation Army’s Angel Tree still bears the name of over 100 children waiting for a little Christmas help.

Major Mary Welch said the program has gotten off to a good start, but with so many children involved this year, there are still many looking for their own holiday angels.

“We have 113 angels still available here at our office, and more can be claimed at Walgreens, JCPenny and the library,” Welch said. “We started with 590, and I am thrilled because we are almost down to having 100 left. We did 250 the first day, and that wasn’t bad, but it feels like it’s a little slow this year.”

Welch said she has met one woman in town, who asked to not be identified, who had shared with Welch the reason that she had decided to help multiple children this year.

“We have a woman who at one point was living in California and she and her family have been the recipient from the Angel Tree program,” Welch said. “Her daughter was given a super nice coat and she said it just changed her daughter and the way she looked at herself. She lives her in Selma now and she said that as long as she is able to, she will continue to help out angels.”

Welch said that she understands some people in the community may want to help, but might not be able to get everything on a child’s Angel Tree list.

“If someone doesn’t think they can fulfill all the needs of an angel, they are welcome to drop off toys or other items at our office that we can distribute to the angels who’s names haven’t been selected,” Welch said.

The Salvation Army’s office in Selma is located at 2104 Franklin St., and Welch said gifts could be dropped off between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. on weekdays. All gifts should be dropped off by Dec. 13.
