John Clark

John Clark, age 91, of Selma, Alabama, died on October 18, 2013. His death followed a brief illness.

Mr. Clark was born August 10, 1922 in Sheringham, England. He was preceded in death by his parents: Leonard Kimpton Clark and Hannah Rose Wyatt Clark and his brother Raymond William Clark. He is survived by his daughter Elizabeth Rose Clark Koch (Florian) of Amelia Island, FL; grandchildren, Sarah Catherine Cook (Jackson) of Birmingham and John Nicholas Koch (Denise L.) of Birmingham; great-grandchildren, Harper Rose Cook, Jackson Best Cook, John Nicholas Koch, Jr. and Vincent Florian Koch; nieces and nephews, John Raymond Clark of Cypress, Virginia C. Wootton of Norfolk, England, Jo Wayne H. Chism (Chalmers H.) of Birmingham, James M. Simon (Cheryl) of Alexandria, VA, Nancy S. Snider (Charles) of Montgomery and Thomas V. Harmon of Miami, FL.

He married Jean H. Clark on October 30, 1942 and had been married for 69 years at the time of her death. Mr. Clark was educated in London, England and was a graduate of Louisiana State University School of Banking. He began his banking career with Lloyds Bank Limited in England in 1939. He joined the Royal Air Force in 1940. He served as an Instructor Pilot both in Montgomery, AL and in England leaving the service as a Flight Left Lieutenant. Upon returning to America following World War II he joined 1st National Bank of Birmingham. In 1970 he came to Selma, AL as President of City National Bank- later becoming president of AmSouth Bank of Selma.

During his lifetime he served on many community boards and service organizations in both Birmingham and Selma. Most notably he was a member and chairman of the Board of the Vaughn Hospital and Foundation for 36 years. He was devoted to the improvement of his community and he found his greatest joy in service to others and making lifelong friends in the banking industry and his community. He was a faithful member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church; serving in various positions on the Church Vestry.

Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, October 22, 2013 at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church with Reverends David and Betsy Powell officiating and Lawrence Brown-Service Funeral Home directing. A private family burial will follow. The family will receive friends from 10-11 a.m. in the Lower Parrish Hall of St. Paul’s.

Active pallbearers will be Catesby Ap R. Jones, Thomas Ap R. Jones, John Calame, James Hines, J. Parke Keith, Jeff Dennis, Edward McCurdy and Doug Murphy. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Jerry Dillard, Dr. Caldwell Debardeleben , Dr. Louis McMillon and the Board of Directors of Vaughn Place Senior Living.

The family would like extend their heartfelt thanks to the Cedar Hill Assisted Living Staff, Mrs. Jo Anne Middlebrooks and Mrs. Betty Varner.

In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be made to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, The Selma-Dallas County Public Library or the Central Alabama Animal Shelter.
