Starting next Friday night, the Old Cahawba Archaeological Park and the Selma-Dallas Tourism & Convention Bureau will reveal Dallas County’s spooky spirits on Selma’s annual Haunted History Tours.

The groups will offer residents a frightful tour of both Selma and Old Cahawba Archaeological Park’s most haunted areas Friday and Saturday night.

The weekend will begin with Old Cahawba Archaeological Park’s Cahawba Spirits Investigation on Friday, Oct. 18. The park staff will share authentic historical accounts of personal experiences and sightings. The Central Alabama Paranormal Investigations will attend to demonstrate ghost-hunting equipment and lead the group in a paranormal investigation.

“It’s the one night you can be at Alabama’s famous ghost town,” said Lindy Derry, the Director of Old Cahawba. “This year we have actually, in our historical research, found some amazing ghost stories that we didn’t know about before.”

Available tour times for Friday are 7,7:30, 8, 8:30 and 9 p.m. Guests should arrive at least 20 minutes early. Following the tour, which last 90 minutes, will be a bonfire where participants can swap ghost stories.

The following morning is the Old Cahawba’s “Hear the Dead Speak” daylight tour, which takes 45 minutes. A tour guide will help participants search for messages long dead inhabitants may have left behind in the relic landscape. That tour costs $6.

Also, the Selma-Dallas Tourism & Convention Bureau will host a tour Oct. 19 at 5:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. The tour will take participants to Old Live Oak Cemetery and three historic homes in Selma. The group will visit the Trotter home, the Ware-Baker-Jones home and the George Baker home. The house owners will tell people about the paranormal activities that happen in those homes.

Ashley Mason, the Tourism Director at Selma-Dallas County Tourism & Convention Bureau, has not been on the tour herself, but she heard good things about it from those that have.

“They say it’s incredible,” Mason said. “A lot of the people that come are from out of town.”

During the investigation, members of the Black Belt Paranormal Research Team will explain how to operate their equipment and use it during their ghost hunt.

There will be a screening of footage of last year’s investigation with guest investigator CBS Reporter Stephanie Hicks of WAKA Montgomery.

“You don’t have to believe in ghosts to hear the past speaking to you,” Derry said.

All tour tickets should be purchased in advance to ensure seating. Call the Selma-Dallas County Chamber at 875-7241 to purchase tickets.
