Memorial Stadium will be filled with music Saturday, Oct. 19, as 15 bands hit the football field to compete in the 2013 Central Alabama Battle of the Bands Competition.
The annual event, which starts at 12:30 p.m. this year, is sponsored by Selma High School Marching Saints. Because of the large number of bands presenting this year, the SHS Marching band will not perform.
Brandon Williams, the band director at SHS, said the competition gives the community a chance to hear and watch bands they may not have seen otherwise.
“There are some great bands out there,” Williams said. “Some people have not been outside of the county to hear them.”
The competition will feature marching bands from Calhoun High School, Bessemer City High School, Paul W. Bryant High School, Jeff Davis High School, Robert E. Lee High School, Tuscaloosa Central High School and many more.
The Concordia College Magnificent Marching Hornets Band will give the final show presentation as the exhibition band.
Tickets are $10 at the gate and $8 for those that pay in advance. The band members and band boosters of SHS will be selling tickets. You can also visit Selma High School to purchase tickets.
The proceeds will provide the SHS Marching Band with new instruments, something the group is in dire need of this year, Williams said.
Six judges from various County Schools across the state will critique the bands performances.
Three judges are responsible for judging the band, one the percussion, one the majorette and dance line, and another will judge the flag line.
