Dorothy Lockett, left to right, Dorothy J. Brown, President Pinkie H. Platt and Nancy G. Sewell, all members of the Selma Chapter of The Links, Inc. are preparing for the group’s 18th annual Walk-A-Thon.

The Selma Chapter of The Links Inc. will be having their 18th Annual Walk-A-Thon Saturday from 7:30 a.m. – 9:30 a.m. as a part of a national health initiative.

Every chapter of The Links Inc. is asked to sponsor an annual walkathon. This event will raise awareness and funds for breast cancer in honor of October being National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Because of some constraints, such as the bridge being unavailable, the group has change the location from the usual Memorial Stadium to inside the Selma Mall, which is located on E Highland Avenue.

Selma Chapter President of The Link Inc. Pinkie Platt encourages everyone to come out and support the cause.

“We encourage our area of youth, as well as all of our citizens, to come out and enjoy us in our walk for health and fitness,” Platt said.

The group is asking for a donation of $5 from students and seniors and $10 from adults. Charter member Dorothy Gardner said those that aren’t able to contribute should still come out and enjoy the event.

“Just come on anyway. We want them to have a good time,” Gardner said.

The Selma Chapter will send their total fundraising profits to the national foundation of Link Inc. and they’ll get back half of that back.

That portion will go to Edmundite Missions.

Charter member Nancy Sewell said participants receive healthy snacks, such as apples, juice, and breakfast bars.

“It’s a wonderful affair,” Sewell said as she recalled past events. “We look forward to it annually.”

Platt has faith that the community will attend and contribute to the fundraiser.

“Hopefully we’ll have a good group with good participation as well,“ Platt said.
