School tournament wraps today

Based on the returns from a baseball tournament last weekend, it looks like there will be a new elementary school fall baseball league.
Payne, Clarke, Edgewood, Kingston, Knox and Meadowview elementary schools all participated in the start of a baseball tournament last weekend, but rain forced the games scheduled for Saturday to be played this weekend.
Despite Mother Nature’s fury, organizers feel the kids are having enough fun and the crowd was big enough to warrant a full fledge league.
“I’m getting a lot of positive voice returns and the kids and the crowd,” Johnson said. “I think definitely next year we will get a league going.”
The tournament, which is taking place at Earnest Bennett Baseball Field, drew what City Council Ward 8 representative Michael Johnson called “a huge” crowd”, which showed the support he was looking for in turning this trial run into a fall baseball league next season.
Johnson said he and other organizers are still in the early stages of planning, but he plans to have girls’ baseball in the league as well. He hopes each school can have three teams, with students broken down by age groups.
One potential problem he may have to work out is that football season will coincide with the baseball league, something he has already started to think about.
”We are going to try to schedule it where they can do both,” Johnson said. “I’m going to talk to the principals and see if we can…work around the football schedule and see if we can do both. Some kids want to do both.”
Saturday’s games start at 9 a.m.
