Kitty Grey Long

Kitty Grey Long passed away Sunday, September 22, 2013, at the hospital in Norwalk, Connecticut after a brief illness. She was born in Memphis, Tennessee on April 30, 1924, the daughter of Harry Nelson Pharr, an engineer with the Mississippi River Commission, and Rose Scott Coleman Pharr, originally from Uniontown, Alabama. Kitty Grey graduated from Miss Hutchison’s School in Memphis in 1942. She attended the University of Alabama during her freshman year in college, and graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Southwestern at Memphis (Rhodes College) in 1946. During college she became a member of Chi Omega Fraternity. On October 19, 1946 she married Thomas Ralston Long in Uniontown. They resided in Uniontown where he was Mayor for 18 years and served as a member of the Alabama Legislature.

She was active in the Presbyterian Church throughout life including Idlewild Presbyterian in Memphis, Tennessee, First Presbyterian Church in Uniontown, Alabama, and First Presbyterian Church in New Canaan, Connecticut. Organizations in which she participated include the Colonial Dames of America, Daughters of the American Revolution, United Daughters of the Confederacy, the Uniontown Harmony Club, the Crescent Club and the Uniontown Garden Club.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralston. She is survived by five children: Thomas Ralston Long IV of Uniontown, Alabama; Mary Dudley Long of Pensacola, Florida and Birmingham, Alabama; Harry Pharr Long and wife Susan Wilkerson Long of Anniston, Alabama; Frances de La Rosa and husband Fernando La Rosa of Macon, Georgia; Rose Scott Rothbart and husband Carl Rothbart of New Canaan, Connecticut. In addition she is survived by seven grandchildren: Sarah Frances Long and husband Phillip Wyatt of Tuscaloosa, Alabama; Eleanor Dudley Long and Natalie Coleman Long of Thomaston, Alabama; Harry Pharr Long, Jr. of Birmingham, Alabama; Susan Knight Long of New York, New York; Charles Henry Rothbart and Katherine Anne Rothbart of New Canaan, Connecticut; and one great-grandchild, Jack D. DuBose of Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

Funeral services will be conducted by Reverend George McKee and will be held at the First Presbyterian Church in Uniontown, Alabama at 11:00 a.m., Friday, September 27, 2013 followed by graveside services at Rosemont Cemetery in Uniontown.

Serving as Pallbearers are Oscar Bostick, Robert Byrd, John Catmur, Roland Hester, Mason Hill, Jeff Mansell, Jimmy Mackenzie, Bill Mackey, and Coleman Meador. Honorary Pallbearers include Tommy Allison, Jim Barnes, Carty Blackwell, Jim Bird, Columbus Carter, Bob Coleman, Harris Coleman, Hardie Kimbrough, Bobby Charles Merkle, Robert Miller, Robert McKee, Tommy Paschall, John Pharr, Bill Poellnitz, Harry Powe, Johnny Shaw, and Clare Smiley.
