The McRae-Gaines Learning Center and Wallace Community College Selma want Selma residents to get in shape.

The center will host a heath fair on Sept. 28, titled “Get Fit Selma! Health and Fitness Festival 2013.”

The festival will take place at Wallace Community College and will include basic health screenings, such as blood sugar, blood pressure, weight and pediatric check; a children’s challenge, which will include fitness dance and yoga routines; a 5K run and a vendor fair.

McRae-Gaines Learning Center director Sadie Moss said she hopes the festival will educate and encourage Selma residents to eat health and exercise regularly.

“If you know that you are supposed to eat right then you might not make as many trips to Church’s Chicken,” Moss said. “You may only go to eat chicken once this week, instead of everyday. People need to know what is healthy for them.”

Former National Football League player and fitness professional Kevin Drake will also be at the event to sign autographs and be a celebrity starter in the 5K run.

“I’m very excited that Kevin will be there,” Moss said. “We hope that some of the other people from the area, like Ben Obomanu, will also make an appearance.”

Moss said the center is trying to imitate the health fairs held by Dr. Bruce Taylor, who practices internal medicine.

The fairs, held from 2004 to 2010, attracted nearly 900 people, she said.

The health fair will also raise money for the McRae Gaines Learning Center through sponsorships.

Registration for the 5K run opens at 7 a.m., with the run beginning at 8 a.m.
