Some Selma residents may no longer have to pay garbage fees.
Starting Oct. 1, residents can begin submitting applications to the city for garbage rate exemptions, Selma Mayor George Evans said during the city council’s Thursday work session.
The final deadline for exemption applications is Dec. 31.
To qualify for the exemption, residents must present a current benefit letter from the Social Security office to the Tax and License Department at Selma City Hall.
The exemption only applies to individuals with Social Security as their sole source of income.
A successful application would exempt an applicant from paying 2014 garbage fees.
To continue receiving a garbage rate exemption, applications must be submitted annually before Dec. 31, Evans said.
The city of Selma stopped providing garbage service on Feb. 1 and switched to Advanced Disposal, a private garbage disposal company.
