The Selma Quarterback Club kicked off its season Monday night, with a pair of guests that engaged members with interesting tidbits about Alabama and Auburn recruiting and food from Hancock’s Barbecue.
Andrew Bone from TideSports.com and Justin Hokanson from AuburnSports.com provided a breakdown of each school’s recruiting outlook and hen answered questions on a stage at Julius Talton’s home that overlooks the Alabama River.
“This is an incredible place to have it,” Hokanson said, looking back over his shoulder at the Alabama River below him. “These people have been incredibly hospitable. It is a lot of fun.”
While the members of the club enjoyed barbeque and sipped on drinks, the duo flowed through football recruits as easy as if they were singing the Alphabet.
“I thought they were extremely informative,” Selma Quarterback Club captain Nick Horne said. “I thought all the information they gave us about Alabama and Auburn recruiting, where the teams are going, what recruits thought processes are, how the coaches handle recruiting — I thought was just invaluable.”
Both speakers regularly travel the state to get the latest scoop on where high school athletes may go and they enjoy being able to take time to update fans on a player’s options, but a lot of times they are stuck behind their computers and do not get a lot of time to be face to face with fans.
Hokanson said that at times talking to the fans helps him see another perspective on the program or a certain player.
“We are in within the programs every step of the way, so when you are that far into it you overlook some of the simple things and from a fan’s perspective they want to know about this guy and this guy and maybe you’ve already discounted him or you are overlooking him,” Hokanson said.
Bone said he does many speaking engagements and he always enjoys getting to interact with the fan bases.
“You get to come to come to events like this and I do a lot of speaking engagements all the time where people come up and tell me tshey read our stuff and follow us on Twitter and it is awesome,” Bone said.
For those interested in joining the quarterback club, it is not too late. There are seven meetings remaining on the year and registration is $175. Speakers still to come later this year are Auburn Athletics Director Jay Jacobs, David Langner and Roger Mitchell from the famous “Punt Bama Punt” game, and SEC official Marc Curles. Curles will speak at the next meeting, Sept. 9.
