A charity golf tournament will take place Saturday, Aug. 24 at Valley Grande Golf Course to support the Selma-Dallas County Sav-A-Life ministry, which supports people that are dealing with an unplanned or crisis pregnancy.
The tournament is a three-man scramble featuring 26 teams. The fee is $70 per player or $210 per team, which includes tickets for door prize drawings, lunch, three mulligans per player and non-alcoholic beverages.
Jennifer Dobbs, executive director of Selma-Dallas County Sav-A-Life, said fundraisers like the golf tournament help fund the ministry.
“We don’t get enough funding monthly to be able to sustain us, so we to do these fundraisers just to be able to pay for the bills and for all of the equipment that is necessary to be able to offer our services to these families,” Dobbs said.
Dobbs said Sav-A-Life is hoping to raise enough money to purchase an ultrasound machine through the golf tournament and a banquet that will be held in February. She said the golf tournament is a chance to help a great cause and have a little fun.
“Since 1973, over 52 million babies have lost their life due to the act of abortion. No woman wants to have an abortion,” Dobbs said. “They just don’t feel like they have the support that they need to be able to give life to the child. What better cause can you support than the literal life of an unborn baby?”
First prize is $100 per player, second place is $75 per player and third place is $50 per player. A longest drive and closest to the pin winner will also receive $100. Dobbs said local businesses have rallied around Sav-A-Life, with many contributing door prizes.
Among the businesses donating door prizes are Jones Interstate Tire Co., Peaceful Solutions, Safford Tire & Hardware, Tractor Supply Co., Edward’s Nursery, Jones Oil Co., Holly Farms, Mee Too, Four Seasons Nursery, Hatfield Electronics and Action Appraisals. Food sponsors include Zeigler Meats, Pepsi Co., The Shack and C.C. Wilkerson.
Dobbs also said that Elkdale Baptist Church will also be helping out, baking snacks and doing a lot of the legwork needed.
Generally, Save-A-Life has three main fundraisers: this golf tournament, a bass tournament and its “walk for life” in spring.
