Wallace Community College Selma’s Africa Tyler earned a volleyball scholarship to Victory University in Memphis, Tenn., where she will play with the Eagles this upcoming season.
Wallace volleyball head coach April Harper said Tyler will be missed, calling her an “asset” to the Patriots’ volleyball program.
“Africa was a well-rounded player. She could do it all,” Harper said. “She was a middle, that was her position, but she could play all positions. She was a great passer, great server, blocker. She did it all her sophomore year.”
Tyler spent her two years at Wallace as a middle hitter.
Tyler, who went to Southside High School, was a team captain of the Patriots’ during her sophomore season. Her head coach said that her “leadership qualities” was something that separated her from other players.
Harper said one of the other attributes that made Tyler special was her height, which was above average for the position she played.
“She is an extremely tall middle, which is what I needed,” Harper said. “She is about 5-10, which was very effective.”
At Victory,Tyler will have a chance to learn from University of Alabama great Crystal Hudson, who will be entering her second season as volleyball coach for the Eagles.
In Harper’s four seasons at Wallace, four volleyball players have been awarded scholarships to four year schools.
