This weekend the Dallas County Sportsplex will host the seven and eight-year-old district 4 Dixie Youth baseball tournament, which will feature some of the best youth baseball talent in the area.
Selma has two All-Star teams taking part in the event, the Selma Patriot AA and the Selma Southeastern League. Top two teams from the sub-district tournament will go to district play, so it is possible both Selma teams could advance.
“This is the first time for our seven and eights to play in a tournament.,” Selma’s Parks & Recreation Director Elton Reece said. “This is a machine pitch league.
Event organizers are hopeful that a large turnout could give the home teams a little edge.
“The local people can come out and support the teams, so usually the local teams fare well,” Reece said.
In the opening games on June 14, Selma Southeastern will play Marbury and Selma Patriot AA will play Holtville. The tournament is in a double elimination format. The championship game will be held June 18, but depending on the result of that game a second game could be needed to decide the champion on June 19. Each night of the tournament, games will get underway at 6 p.m.
“Our top two teams, will go to either Grove Hill, Jackson, or somewhere down that way,” Reece said. “It just depends on who wins down there.”
Meanwhile, the 9 and 10-year-old All-Star tournament will be held in Holtville starting June 14 . Two Selma teams are also playing in that age group, the Selma Southern Dixie Youth Baseball and Selma National League.
“If one of our nine and ten-year-old teams wins the sub-district in Holtville, then we will host the [district] tournament next weekend,” Reece said.
