Memorial Day often marks not only the beginning of summer vacation, but a change in normal garbage disposal schedules for Selma residents. However, this year’s Memorial Day holiday will not cause as much of a disruption to local resident’s trash pick-up schedules as it has in past years.

Advanced Disposal, the waste management company that now handles trash disposal for the city of Selma, will operate under a normal trash pick-up schedule during Memorial Day weekend.

“[Memorial Day] is not a holiday for us, so it will be regular pick-up [schedules] for everyone,” an Advanced Disposal representative said.

After receiving a bid from Advanced Disposal, the Selma City Council voted to move trash collection to the private sector as a cost-cutting measure in early January.

Although residents had reservations about the new garbage disposal company’s Feb. 1 takeover, the transition has now taken full effect. This is the first holiday that Advanced Disposal will handle as a holiday pick-up schedule for residents.

Although the trash disposal schedule remains the same during Memorial Day, the city’s debris pick-up schedule may not.

The city of Selma’s Public Works Department is due to release a public service announcement concerning debris pick-up Thursday.
