ArtsRevive invites artists across Alabama to submit their works to the 11th annual juried art exhibition March 9 through April 28.
The categories include oil/acrylic, 3-D, watercolor, drawing/pastel, mixed media and photography. Awards are $1,000 for Best in Show, $200 for first place in each category, $100 for second place and $50 for third. The People’s Choice winner will receive $200.
Deadline to enter is Jan. 31.
The Selma show continues to grow and attract quality art and has become well known for its varied sampling of Alabama talent at its finest, said chairman Vickie Stoudenmire.
“Several artists have become well known and established their reputation throughout the region, state and elsewhere with this show,” Stoudenmire said.
The exhibition, which will be held at the historic Carneal ArtsRevive building next to the Alabama River, coincides with the annual Historic Selma Pilgrimage March 15-16. Pilgrimage brings people from across the South and elsewhere, giving artists an even greater audience.
Jurors are Alabama natives Ted Whisenhunt and Jerry Siegel.
Siegel, a Selma native, is a graduate of the Art Institute of Atlanta and has a commercial photography studio there. His work is included at The Telfair Museum, Jepson Center for the Arts, Ogden Museum of Southern Art, Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts and others. He also received the first Artadia Award in Atlanta in 2009. The mission of Artadia is to encourage innovative artistic practice and dialogue through a network of support across the U.S.
Whisenhunt is chair of the Art Department and associate professor of art at Young Harris College in Georgia. His arts education includes degrees from Birmingham-Southern College and Florida State University. He also studied at the University of Loreno de Medici in Florence, Italy. Whisenhunt formerly served as head of the Art Department at Judson College in Marion.
To enter the contest, each artist must submit a $35 non-refundable submission fee, which includes up to three entries per category and a membership in ArtsRevive. A committee will choose works for the show from photos or jpeg images on a CD submitted by the artist. Participants will be notified of acceptance by Feb. 18.
A members only reception will be held March 9, and individuals can join at the door. The show is free to everyone beginning March 14.
Artists may offer their work for sale during the show. A 20 percent commission on sales will go to ArtsRevive. To apply applicants must be a resident of Alabama, the work must not have been previous shown in ArtsRevive shoes and all work must be original and all reference material should be the work of the artist, meaning no paintings made from other painters or photographers’ work should be submitted for competition.
