With her leadership on the court and tough play down the stretch, Wallace volleyball’s Africa Tyler is the female athlete of the week.

Tyler, a native of Selma in her last year at Wallace, was key in the Lady Patriots’ 3-2 (25-19, 20-25, 25-19, 25-27, 17-15) home win over Concordia on Tuesday, as she had five kills, including the final two of the match, in the fifth and final set.

Tyler said she fights to be a leader on the court and gives her all for the team.

“My role on the court is to show leadership, to be a leader, and keep my team motivated and in high spirits on the court when they’re down,” Tyler said. “It makes me proud that I can give my all for the team and do my best to bring us back and win.”

While Tyler enjoys the teamwork, aggressiveness and attacking that comes along with being a front-row player on the volleyball court, her aspirations don’t stop at athletics.

“My goals are to get my associates degree in science and transfer to Alabama State, and major in physical therapy,” Tyler said.
