Water Avenue will be lined with crafts, music, food and much more Oct. 13 for the 42nd Annual Riverfront Market Day.

The annual event, which is sponsored by the Riverfront Market Authority and the Selma-Dallas County Historic Preservation Society, will begin at 9 a.m. and end at 5 p.m. Admission is $2 for adults, $1 for children and free for children age 12 and younger.

Quality vendors, artisans and craftsman will all join forces to bring an enjoyable experience for all ages.

Last year, more than 3,000 people came out to enjoy the day. And this year, more are expected, Candi Duncan, market day communication chairman for vendors said.

“We partnered with Arts Revive about four or five years ago to try and bring quality vendors in and less flea market type things,” Duncan said.

Admission costs will benefit the RiverFront Society, which strives to preserve downtown Selma and keep it beautiful.

The day will kick off with the music of local band, Lower Society, which plays a variety of country music. The Ramblers play jazz, and will be near the festival entrance at Songs of Selma Park.

Vendors of all kinds will also be selling merchandise. Glass-blown jewelry, children’s wooden toys, handmade soybean candles, oil paintings and homemade jams and jellies are just a few things that will be for sale.

“It really is a fun event,” Duncan said. “It’s something you can do with your children and walk the dog down the street — you can’t do that in a lot of places.”

New attractions at this year’s festival include a scavenger hunt and a train ride for children. Three cash prizes will be awarded to the winners of the hunt: $300 for first place, $200 second place and $100 third place.

Duncan added many out-of-towners come to Selma the weekend of the festival.

“We have a lot of people that travel out of town just to see the Tale-Tellin’ Festival or for the Market Day.” Duncan said.
