The Selma High School Saints will take their first long trip to Mobile County come Friday.
The Saints (1-1, 0-1 Class 5A Region 3) will hit the road to face the Citronelle Wildcats (1-1, 0-1 Class 5A Region 3) Friday at 7 p.m. in a region contest.
Saints head football coach Leroy Miles said the Wildcats are a tough football team.
“They’re a hard-nose team, they get after it pretty good,” Miles said. “They run an old, split-four defense. It’s also a tough place to play down there.”
With a more than 200 mile round trip for Friday’s game, Miles said the Saints will have to leave a little earlier and have pre-game meal on the road.
He added the Saints are ready for the trip and have responded well in practice after last week’s loss to defending Class 4A state champion Jackson.
“I think preparation went well. The kids have responded and have returned to practice and worked very hard,” Miles said. “They’re just doing what we ask them to do and paying attention to the game plan. The response has been good coming off last week’s loss.”
Miles said the Saints will have to be tough and in control in order to win.
“We’re going to just try to go in and control the football and minimize our mistakes,” Miles said, “and hopefully we’ll be able to have some success on the road. We’re not doing anything fancy, just good, hard-nose football with good blocking and tackling.”
