Editor’s note: Athlete of the week will run each Thursday. Next week will see the debut of the female athlete of the week, which will then run alongside male athlete of the week each Thursday.
Following last week’s home-opening win, Morgan Academy Senators running back Jamie Bearden is the athlete of the week.
Bearden racked up 197 yards rushing and two touchdowns, one for 69 yards and another for 32 yards, during the Senators’ 61-12 win over Meadowview Christian School.
Bearden said his success is all about focus and strong play from the line.
“I try to focus mentally and get prepared to play and run the ball,” Bearden said. “The line blocks real well and I just run the ball hard.”
Bearden’s performance last week comes after he opened the season with 132 yards and two touchdowns on ten carries on the road against Pike Liberal Arts School in a 39-8 region win for the Senators.
Bearden said he hopes one day he’s fortunate enough to take his talents to the next level.
“I hope to get a scholarship when I’m older,” Bearden said. “I’m hoping to be able to get a full ride somewhere.”
In the meantime, Bearden is focused squarely on this season and the path ahead for the Senators.
“We’ve got a good team this year,” Bearden said, “and our goal is to win state.”
