The Dallas County Commission unanimously agreed Monday to pay a portion of the costs associated with the Fourth of July fireworks celebration at Memorial Stadium next Wednesday.
The city of Selma as well as donations and funds raised from area fundraisers will also help the show, themed “Youth: America’s Heritage and Hope,” come to fruition. More than 1,000 community members are expected to attend the event, which begins at 5:30 p.m.
The commission also unanimously voted to continue allowing one-quarter of the one-cent sales tax to continue to go to the Dallas County School Board.
Dallas County Probate Judge Kim Ballard said the tax amounts to close to $1 million for the school board, but noted that total is still much lower than the statewide average. Of the 132 schools systems in the state, Ballard said Dallas County’s is ranked number 131 in terms of local funding.
“Our schools do a great job on limited funding,” Ballard said. “We couldn’t be more pleased with the work they do each and every year.”
