A local high school standout will continue her career on the court and the field after signing a college scholarship on Thursday.
Meadowview Christian School’s Katey McIntyre will continue her basketball and softball careers at the collegiate level after signing a scholarship with Judson College.
Katey said her determination to play at the next level is what helped her receive a scholarship.
“I think because I never gave up — my dream had always been to play college ball, and, no matter what, I was going to play college ball,” Katey said. “I was determined. My family along the way pushing me, and after practice making me stay and shoot and making me stay and work on hitting. My family has been a big part of it.”
Family has played a big role for Katey inside and outside the athletic arena, as her father Bryan is the head softball coach for Meadowview, and her cousin Elyse is an assistant softball coach and head girls basketball coach for the Trojans.
Seeing Katey be able to accomplish her dream fills her mother Lisa with pride.
“We’re very proud of her and it’s a testament to her ability to be a great student and a great athlete,” Lisa said. “We want to see her play at the next level.”
Bryan agreed, and said Judson is a great place in a close location for his daughter.
“As a coach and father, I just echo what she (Lisa) said. This is what she’s (Katey) worked hard for and it came to fruition,” Bryan said. “I’m happy for her. It’s really nice. She has two older sisters who played. The travel part and the convenience is nice and I know Judson’s a good school, and I’ve known her new coach Lee Jones for a long time and he’s a fine fellow. So I’m real pleased with where she’s at.”
Elyse said Katey provided tremendous leadership for the Lady Trojans on the court, and as a former Judson Eagle, she knows Katey’s future is in good hands.
“She was a leader, she was a good ball player, not only in athletic ability, but she has brains behind it, too,” Elyse said. “She has a lot of drive, a lot of desire to do well and to get better at whatever she’s doing. It’s nice. I went to Judson, so I know what they’re capable of, what kind of school they’ve got there and their athletics, so for Katey to go there it warms my heart that she’s going to be a part of what Judson has to offer. I’m really proud of her.”
And just as family has played an important role in Katey becoming who she is today, it’s the family atmosphere that attracted her to Judson.
“My favorite part about Judson was just that it is a smaller school and it resembles Meadowview in a way that everyone knows each other,” Katey said. “We’re all kind of close as a family, and it’s close to home, so I can go home anytime I want, I don’t have to worry about being homesick.”
