Thursday is another chance to give back

Thursday, Feb. 2 the Alabama Association of Nonprofits will partner with the Alabama Broadcasters Association and the Razoo Foundation to sponsor “Alabama Gives Day.”

The event is a one-day opportunity for individuals to make monetary contributions to the nonprofit organizations of their choice. In Selma and Dallas County, there will be plenty who can use a little shot in the arm. As Salvation Army Major Tonya Roberts  stressed on several occasions, when the Christmas holidays are over, people don’t feel quite as generous anymore. It’s almost as if they assume the need for assistance simply disappears when the Christmas trees are taken down. Unfortunately, the need still exists and sometimes increases as the year goes on. People still need help with power bills, grocery bills, increasing their education or finding a safe place to stay when times get tough. No matter the month or season, somewhere out there people need help. The people who provide that help need assistance as well.

With continued cuts from the government, grant opportunities for these organizations has been drastically cut. Some lost as much as $30,000 over the past year alone. Many nonprofits relied heavily on a boost from these grants to get them over the edge. Now it is up to everyday people to step up and fill the gap. If you are able, please participate and support one of our nonprofits. Help them fill their continued needs.
