After a continued investigation, the Selma Police Department uncovered the events that led to a recent shooting at the corner of Highland Avenue and Broad Street.

Officers arrested T’Chelpio Woods, 24, and charged him with robbery first degree. Selma Chief of Police William Riley said the arrest was part a bizarre situation because Woods was actually the victim of the gunshot.

“Basically, the victim in this case advised on Jan. 11 that Woods attempted to rob him while he was attempting to purchase drugs,” he said. “A struggle ensued and the gun was taken from Woods. He was shot by his own gun when he was trying to rob the victim.”

During interviews with Woods, Riley said investigators were able to piece together the events that almost cost Woods his life.

“It was a wild situation,” he said. “The whole basis was the victim in this case was in the area to meet Woods in reference to a drug transaction. The victim had the money to buy the drugs and — from the information we were given — Woods pulled out a gun and tried to rob the victim.”

Woods was struck in the upper side of the chest area by what Riley said investigators believe was a .380 caliber pistol.

Woods, he said, is fortunate to have lived through the ordeal.

“It was a small caliber weapon,” he said. “Had the weapon been a little larger it would have been a totally different situation.”

Woods posted a $2,500 bond.
