School board changes venue

Understanding the conference room at the Selma City School’s central office would in no way account for the crowd expected to attend Tuesday’s called school board meeting, school officials changed the venue to Clark Elementary School.

The meeting, which will begin at 5:30 p.m. will be highlighted by the planned discussion on potentially terminating superintendent of education Dr. Donald Jefferson’s contract.

During a testy meeting on Thursday, Oct. 13, the board voted 3-2 to place Jefferson on administrative leave immediately pending the hearing Tuesday.

The board cited Jefferson reportedly authorizing a contract with a school assessment service without board approval prior to the start of the 2010-2011 school year.

That meeting was followed by another called board meeting, arranged this Tuesday, where parents had requested the chance to address the board about their decision. But, three board members, Holland Powell, Frank Chestnut Jr. and Brenda Randolph Obomanu, failed to show, preventing the board from gaining a quorum and holding an official meeting

The same board members who did not show up Tuesday were the same three who voted to place Jefferson on administrative leave.

In lieu of an official meeting, the more than 300 who attended, held a rally of sorts, discussing ways to continue opposing the board’s decision.

The meeting set for next Tuesday will be open to the public.
