Alma Ophelia Mosley Pettaway was born February 4, 1938 in historic Selma, Alabama. She slipped away quietly in her sleep on September 4, 2011 at her home in Birmingham, Alabama. Her parents were the late Rev. Dr. Andrew Moseley, Sr.. and Eva Murdock Mosley.
She met her husband, Rev. Dr. Collins Pettaway, Sr., while working. They were united in Holy Matrimony by Rev. Dr. Albert McCorvey and to this Holy Union eight children were born and reared. She served proudly as a devoted Pastor’s wife, mother and homemaker.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, Clara Mosley Howard and Annie Alberta Ali; two grandchildren, James Earl Alexander, Jr. and Ashley Knekel Pettaway; one great grandchild, Makinsey Carter and her baby daughter, Alma Ophelia Pettaway Threat.
She leaves to cherish a loving and devoted husband, Rev. Dr. Collins Pettaway, Sr.; children, Bruce Griffin of buffalo, New York, Lucretia D. Pettaway of Selma, AL, A. Maria (Eric) Vance of Birmingham, AL., L. Vann (Glenn) Pettaway of New Market, AL., Denise (John) Alexander-Johnson of Selma, AL., Attorney Collins (Synethia) Pettaway, Jr. of Selma, James H. (Rositta) Pettaway of Ironale, AL., and Anthony M. (Elece) Pettaway of Birmingham, AL.; seventeen grandchildren, Krystle, Kendrick, Kimberly, Porsha, Bruce, Jr., Paige, LaTonya, Collins,III, Candice, Jasmine, Amber, Roderick, Amauri, Alexander, Anthony, II, MeShayla, and Kennadi; two great grandchildren, Kiyah and Kristian; one brother, Rev. Dr. Andrew M. (Gerthadine) Mosley, Jr. of Richmond, Virginia; two sisters, Eva M. (Laska) Jones of Redlands, California and Ms. Eunice Dudley of Sommerville, North Carolina; one brother-in-law, Sam Sammie Ali of Cleveland, Ohio; two sisters-in-laws, Leona Thomas of Birmingham, Alabama and Lucy Finney of Los Angeles, California, and a plethora of relatives and friends. She nurtured, loved and reared Amber and Alexander after the death of her baby daughter.
