Those who witnessed the events of Sept. 11, 2001 will never forget where they were when they saw planes strike the towers in New York City.

To commemorate the 10th year since the attacks of Sept. 11, Wallace Community College will hold a Day of Remembrance Thursday, Sept. 8 at 12:30 p.m. in the Earl Goodwin Theater.

The program, vice president for instruction Dr. Robert D. McConnell said, will be an early tribute to those who put their lives on the line every day and those who fell in the line of duty 10 years ago.

“The centerpiece is going to be the Concordia College color guard,” he said. “They will present the colors and the ceremony itself is going to be led by Dr. (James) Mitchell, who is our president.”

During the ceremony, 10 candles will be lit to commemorate each year since the attacks.

“We’ll try to represent all the people who died during the tragedy,” he said.

Once the ceremony ends, McConnnell said there will be a procession to a weeping willow tree that was planted on the fifth anniversary of the attacks by Phi Beta Kappa.

“The trees have been here for five years, and everybody knows what it is, but it never had a memorial plaque,” he said.

“We actually have an engraved plaque that is in the works that will be placed on a sign.

“It should be a very nice ceremony. And it should take from 30 to 45 minutes.”

During the ceremony, they will also show a video from President George W. Bush made the night of the attacks.

Students and faculty are invited as well as the public, Selma Chief of Police William T. Riley, Selma Fire Chief Mike Stokes and other first-responders.
