AAU squad seeks help getting to Orlando

When Roosevelt Johnson arranged the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) Basketball program, it was his dream to provide a ministry to players that could also provide fun and exposure.
“I just wanted this opportunity that could captivate and have a big impact on young people’s lives in Selma, Johnson said.
After a solid first year, the 14-year-old Selma Shock has reached the AAU nationals in Orlando, Fla.
However, the squad needs help to get there.
“It costs about $650 for each player,” said Johnson. “They play down there (Orlando) for a week. So when you add in the cost of hotels and food, it gets pretty high up there quickly.”
In order to raise funds, the players have taken to a series of fundraisers to get the funds necessary to make the trip, including car washes, doughnut sales and even basketball tournaments.
“We are trying to do anything we can right now to raise these funds,” Johnson said.
“It’s tough to get a full team to an event that is this big. We are doing all we can do.”
Roosevelt said the exposure that can come from this type of event is hard to explain.
“These kids have a chance to go to Florida and play in front of D-1, D-2 and even NBA scouts,” he said.
“I’m not sure I can put into words just what type an opportunity it is. Coaches in college have started looking at kids at 13 and 14. So to be in front these scouts now. It’s great.”
