School is officially out for summer, and as parents scramble to find something for their children to do, the Selma Ceramic Art Program has everything covered. The program will offer children a chance to explore their imaginations through arts and crafts.
The first art camp, set to begin Monday, is already filled. With nearly 60 students this time around, there are a few spaces left for the second art session scheduled to begin in July.
“We’ve had a wonderful response — every year we have different art projects and the kids have fun,” said program director Candi Duncan. “We try to do a ceramic and glazed ceramic project every year, and the children will probably go home with 10 completed projects.”
Children ages 8 to 16 can participate in the camp for a fee of $100. The first camp will run June 13-17 from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and on Friday from 9 a.m. until noon. Lunch will also be provided.
Duncan said guest instructors, including Charlie “Tin Man” Lucas, will assist the children in projects using such mediums as water color, perspective, scrapbooking, photo tinting, oil paints and calligraphy.
“The instructors will touch a little bit on a lot of areas,” Duncan said. “We’ll provide all of the material, and the children usually help us cook the meals, which they love to do.”
Holly Jones, a rising sophomore from Morgan Academy, has been attending the camp since the age of 8. This year, Jones will not be attending as a student, but as a helper.
“I like the camp because the crafts are new every year,” Jones said. “The weaving and painting, for instance, are really fun. As a helper, I want to be a good leader and help them (the children) come up with good ideas. I think it will be a fun summer.”
The second camp, which has limited availability, is scheduled for July 11-15. The camp will take place Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. and Friday from 9 a.m. until noon. For more information about the camp call 874-2143, 412-8550 or 875-2193.
