Stadium upgrades nearly finished

It’s supposed to be an eternal flame.
The torch that sits in front of Memorial Stadium on top of a stone memorial stays lit at all times. Well, it did until this year when it was shut off while a major stadium renovation was under way.
Now, the flame is lit again, just in time for Monday’s 11 a.m. Memorial Day ceremonies. The relighting also shows just how far the stadium renovation project has progressed.
“We have had it on for a few days now,” Selma Parks and Recreation director Elton Reece said. “We have had to cut it off a couple of times because of the high winds and things, but it’s burning right now.”
So far in the past month workers have finished the stadium’s press box and painted the Air Force T-33 that sits out in front of the stadium.
With only a few adjustments to go, Reece is excited about the project coming to a close.
“We just have a couple of things left,” Reece said. “They have to paint the coaches meeting room and we are placing real flagpoles outside of the stadium. Then, we will have to see what we have to do from there with the landscape, because you just don’t know yet until everything else is finished.”
