Voters must maintain enthusiasm

The 36 percent turnout for Tuesday’s special election to determine a representative for Ward 3 is an encouraging sign for Selma.

While the person that will occupy this seat is still undetermined, the dedication of the voters in the ward to find the right person for the job is not.

For the voters of Ward 3 there is still work to do. A July 5 runoff election between Greg Bjelke and Gwen Brown will provide yet another opportunity to cast ballots for the final say in who will represent one of Selma’s most diverse and historic districts.

Our hope is the enthusiasm that has surrounded this election will continue into the summer and motivate even more people to head to the polls.

Since the process of filling the empty seat began, the city has been buzzing with activity  as each of the candidates pounded the pavement to get their names and ideas to the people.

We have the information; we have seen candidate forums and had the opportunity to meet with both candidates one-on-one during their campaigns.

Bjelke and Brown have done their best to let the voters know where they stand. Now it is up to the voters to do the same.

Ward 3 is composed of people from all different walks of life and backgrounds.

It can be a trendsetter for Selma’s other districts in elections to come.
