The hot days of summer may warrant many sips of a cold glass of lemonade or a chance to relax under a shaded tree, or maybe even to read a book.

To kick off your summer, enjoy and embrace the “sensational” aspects of Selma at this year’s Selma-Dallas County Library’s Summer Reading program, set to begin June 6 at the library.

Becky Nichols, library director, said the program, which drew more than 4,000 children last summer, never gets boring.

“We’re looking for this year to be significant and we’re really excited and pumped up,” Nichols said. “There’s just so many great things about Selma and when you can’t go anywhere, books can take you everywhere.”

Nichols said the “Best show in town,” is free to the public. Groups of 10 or more must register to reserve their spot.

“We have a whole list of things,” Nichols said. “We’ll have a magic show, a petting zoo, arts and crafts. We’re encouraging children in kindergarten through the sixth grades to join our reading club. We want each child to read at least 40 books during the eight-week program. Kids will go back to school, smarter.”
