Morgan Academy’s baseball team had its best season in five years and the Alabama Independent School Association recognized the Senators with four spots in the AISA junior all-star baseball game.
Morgan juniors Joel Yarbrough, Crawford Traylor, John Pomeroy and Ethan Fancher were selected to play in the game on June 6 in Troy and the Senators will have their own coach, Bob Taylor, in the dugout with them.
“It’s a big honor for those guys and me,” Taylor said. “To be considered one of the top 36 junior players in the state is a really great testament to how good these guys played all year.”
Taylor said he own selection was a direct reflection on how the Morgan baseball team produced this year.
“If I’m coaching in it, then that means we obviously did something right,” Taylor said. “Obviously we were able to win the region this year and I don’t know the last time the Morgan baseball team was able to do that.”
With the top talent in the state gathering, the prospect of coaching such skilled players has Taylor excited.
“There’s going to be a lot of good talent out there,” Taylor said. “To be around all of it is just a really fun thing to do. As far as the players go, you get to play with others who are just as skilled on a college campus. It’s just a really great time.”
Morgan’s baseball team wasn’t the only one to be honored with all-star players.
The Senator’s softball team will see four players of their own play at Lagoon Park on June 7.
Seniors Brandi Sharpe, Sarah Callin Lewis and Mandy McQueen and junior Jordan Parnell will travel to represent Morgan along with their coach, Jennifer Moore.
“Having these girls go is an honor,” Moore said. “I’m really glad these girls got to go, they have worked hard.”
Moore said the experience for the baseball and softball all-stars will be both fun and beneficial.
“It’s really for the kids,” Moore said. “There will be a lot of scouts in the stands for them to play in front of.
