What do you get when you put together a motivated group of a few hundred people, a beautiful spring evening in Selma and an opponent everyone can agree is worth defeating?

You get the annual Dallas County Relay for Life.

Last weekend, dozens of Relay for Life teams, representing area churches, schools, businesses and groups, came together at Selma’s Memorial Stadium for the annual Relay for Life and raised an amount of money so large, words trying to describe it proved useless.

For a community such as Dallas County to come together and $110,000 for any cause is spectacular. For a community such as Dallas County to come together and raise $110,000 in a sluggish economic environment is astonishing.

The organizers, board of directors and Relay for Life team leaders should be congratulated for their extraordinary efforts to not only set a lofty goal but reach it and surpass it.

And the thousands of people who contributed a dollar here, 50 cents here and a check there should be commended for their dedication to a cause that has at its core the mission of defeating of beating cancer once and for all.

There is a chance — an ever increasing chance — that one of the dollars raised last weekend may prove to be the dollar needed to beat cancer. But regardless of whether cancer is defeated by the time Relay for Life teams from throughout Dallas County converge on Memorial Stadium against next year, one thing is for certain; the foundation for even more successful Relays for Life is there.

If this Relay for Life could raise $110,000 in a year when the economy is sluggish, just imagine what is possible when the economy improves.

The sky is the limit.
