Chamber plans Shred It Day

The Federal Trade Commission reported that more than 10 million Americans are victims of identity theft each year, making it the fastest growing crime in the U.S.
Whether identity thieves are sifting through your personal emails or bank accounts online, they can also target the mailbox: stealing your bills, credit card opportunities and documents with your social security number on them.
This Saturday, from 9:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m., the Selma-Dallas County Chamber of Commerce in partnership with the city of Selma, International Paper and Riverdale Credit Union, will offer a solution to this ever-growing problem: a shredder.
“This is an excellent way to do some spring cleaning,” said Chamber of Commerce executive director Sheryl Smedley. “It’s important to properly dispose of sensitive documents because criminals have made identity theft a million dollar industry. In addition, the shredded material is recycled and that’s good for the environment.”
The “Shred-It” truck will be on site near the Chamber parking lot, to shred outdated, personal documents and other forms like confetti, for free. With a shredder, you increase your chances of protecting your identity.
With more than 140 locations nationwide and abroad, Shred-It specializes in providing tailored document destruction service that allows businesses to comply with legislation and ensure the client, employee and confidential business information is kept secure at all times. Shred-It provides the most secure and efficient confidential information destruction service in the industry, according to the company’s website.
Smedley said the public is limited to shredding only four large boxes and four large trash bags of material. For more information call 875-7241.
