Since 1949, the most distinguished boy in Selma has been recognized with the Paul M. Grist Boy of the Year award.
On May 12 at the St. James Hotel at 6:30 p.m., a new Boy of the Year will be crowned.
The Boy of the Year is given to the young man who distinguishes himself in a number of different arenas, Selma YMCA CEO Bill Porter said.
“You like to see strong academics, strong character, good athletics, involvement in their religion,” Porter said. “It really is just about the best all-around person. We have taken the finalists and interviewed them, so we have had the chance to really get to know them and how they respond.”
The award is named after the man that Porter said “was the Y in those days.”
“He was the backbone of activities in Selma back then, because everything went on at the YMCA. He was so helpful to those in Selma, but even more, was just a great Christian man.”
Fourteen senior students from Dallas County have been nominated and interviewed.
The winner will be revealed at the banquet in May, which will have former three-sport Auburn letterman, and NFL referee Ronnie Baynes.
Baynes also worked as a high school and junior college football coach for more than 35-years, including Parish- now Selma- High School.
“Ronnie exemplifies all the things we look for in our Boy of the Year,” Porter said. “We want the young men to listen to him speak to see what can be accomplished when you set high goals for yourself and never quit on them.”
Tickets can still be purchased for the event at the YMCA located at 1 YMCA Drive off Medical Center Parkway for $20.
Tickets are limited due to the number of seating at the St. James.
