This weekend, members of the community can enjoy a joyful noise.
The Church Street United Methodist Church will sponsor a free concert featuring the Birmingham-Southern College concert choir, Sunday at 3 p.m. inside the church’s sanctuary.
Under the direction of Dr. Lester Seigel, the choir will travel to Montgomery, Mobile, Mississippi and New Orleans before making a final stop in Selma.
Janet Nabors, minister of music and programs for the church, said she’s excited about the event.
“To my knowledge, this is their first time coming to Selma,” Nabors said. “They just wanted to come to Selma and sing; this is something special.”
The choir will perform Johannes Brahms, Franz Liszt, spirituals, three Appalachian folk songs for choir and fiddle and in a capella.
“They’ll do what we call ‘high church’ stuff and even some contemporary music,” Nabors said. “This concert offers people the opportunity to come into our facility in a nonthreatening way and be interested in the arts.”
Nabors hopes the hour-long event will draw a crowd.
“We’re hoping for good weather and a great turnout,” Nabors said.
