Selma has had its fair share of entrepreneurs being recognized for success this year, and not Doris Truax can be added to the list.
Truax, the owner of Truax and Co., was named the University of Alabama’s Female Entrepreneur of the Year on Feb. 2.
“It ranks right up there with getting married and giving birth,” said Truax. “Seriously. I am very honored and very flattered by the announcement.”
Truax said she was honored enough to be nominated for the award, but winning it came as even more of a surprise.
“When I won, I was just really surprised,” said Truax. “I got the announcement and was just like ‘Whoa.’”
The award was given to Truax for her innovative ways of marketing her products and her support of other entrepreneurs in the area, according to the university.
Truax has been involved in the Selma business community all of her life.
At the age of 3, she was introduced when her parents took her daily to their jewelry and gift shop.
She took her first buying trip at 5 and worked in the store until she left for college.
Doris is very active in the community and is involved in many different areas including a book study and conducting seminars on how to properly use manufacturing coupons.
Truax said the influx of award winners from the area comes in part to the work done by Selma-Dallas County Chamber Director Sheryl Smedley.
“You can’t win if you aren’t nominated,” said Truax.
“She has done an excellent of getting all of these nominations out there. So you have to take your hat off to her.”
