SARDIS — A fire destroyed a mobile home on County Road 30 near Sardis and claimed the life of a 1-year-old child Tuesday evening.

Dallas County chief deputy Randy Pugh said the fire, which occurred around 6:30 p.m., is under investigation.

The adults in the house were asleep on a couch, woke up and were able to escape harm with a 3-year-old.

The other child was in a back bedroom and could not be rescued.

Pugh said the state fire investigator was attempting to determine the cause of the fire, which authorities believe began in the kitchen.

Authorities did not identify the family in the mobile home at the time of the fire.
