Mayor sets date for 2011 cleanup day

Cleanup day is set for Saturday, Jan. 8, beginning at 8 a.m.

Selma Mayor George Evans has declared Saturday, Jan. 8, as the first Citywide Cleanup Day of the new year.

Volunteers will assemble at 8 a.m. at the Larry D. Striplin Jr. Performing Arts Center for orientation and breakfast. They’ll receive their assignments to targeted areas throughout the city at about 9 a.m., according to B.J. Smothers, the mayor’s executive assistant.

The mayor will hold a wrap-up session from noon until 1 p.m. Lunch will be served.

Residents are asked to dispose of household trash by placing it at curbside for pickup. Household and street trash, yard debris and brush, furniture and mattresses will be accepted for pickup.

Absolutely no appliances, electronics, garbage, hazardous waste, pesticides, or tires are allowed, according to Smothers.

Garbage bags are available from the Public Works Department.

Six shuttle trucks will run all day and will spend 1— to —1-½ hours on each route.

The routes include:

• Wards 1 and 2: 9 -10:30 a.m.

• Wards 2, 3 and 7: 10:30 a.m. – noon

• Wards 3, 4 and 5: noon – 1:30 p.m.

• Wards 4, 5, 6 and 8: 1:30 – 3 p.m.

• Wards 4, 5, 6 and 8: 3 – 4:30 p.m.

An additional truck will pickup on main thoroughfares.
