Pullam a hero in life and death

Not only did our area lose someone special Wednesday, but the state lost someone special in what can only be called right now a horrible accident.

And while the title and charges of the incident may eventually change, what happened on a stretch of I-65 in Montgomery unfortunately cannot.

Lowndesboro resident Laura Pullam, an EMT with Care Ambulance, was killed when she was struck by a vehicle while attempting to render aid to the victims of another accident.

The investigation continues into the cause and law enforcement officials are reserving judgment until that investigation is complete.

Those who were sitting in traffic in downtown Selma Saturday afternoon, or those who happened to be walking down the sidewalks along Broad Street were graced with the vision of a procession of emergency vehicles, law enforcement vehicles and cars far too long to count that made up Pullam’s funeral procession.

Fire trucks lent their massive size to blocking intersections and ambulances led the way as one of their own — a person whose job it was to help anyone who called — was laid to rest.

The debate over what led to her death is left to those best qualified to do so, but those who knew Pullam are left to wonder what if and what would have become of her life if she had not responded to that call. But, for Pullam, there is little doubt that she would have still gone to that wreck scene to help her fellow man even if she knew the outcome.

May she rest in peace and may God bless her.
