For those wanting a cool, fall Thanksgiving Day. Sorry, you didn’t get your wish. For those wanting a nice, cool, fall day on Friday to enjoy the Iron Bowl. Sorry, you’re not going to get your wish.
The unseasonably warm weather on Thanksgiving Day will give way to unseasonably cold and wet weather on Friday with temperatures dropping more than 20 degrees from one day to the next.
“We will see temperatures at or just above 80 degrees Thursday and then see high temperatures in the mid-50s Friday,” Mary Keiser, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Calera, said.
The significant drop in temperatures is tied to a cold front that will blow through the area during the overnight hours Thursday and into Friday. Along with the cold temperatures, the front will bring with it rain and a good freeze Friday night.
“You will not see much increase in temperature from the overnight low on Thursday night into Friday,” Keiser said. “It’ll go up a few degrees, but the temperature you experience when you wake up Friday morning will be the high for the rest of the day.”
Those fans heading to Tuscaloosa for Friday’s Iron Bowl will need to take a coat and may need a rain jacket or poncho, at least for Friday morning.
“By the time the game starts, there might be a few sprinkles left over, but it should have cleared out by then,” Keiser said, adding that rain should be in the area during the time most fans are tailgating. “It will be cool, but the rain should have moved on by kickoff.”
As for the weekend, temperatures should move into the mid-60s, Keiser said, which is normal for this time of year.
