SELMA — At the back of the carnival ride section of the Central Alabama Fair sits the best ride ever — well, the best ride according to Briana James.

“My favorite is the Moby Dick because it’s fun and impressive,” 7-year-old Briana said. “It takes you all the way up and takes back down.”

The fair opened at an earlier time Wednesday for Kids Day, when all children received free admission.

Briana’s cousin, Jamiya James, 10, also finds the Moby Dick ride the best.

“I like it so much because it is fun every year,” Jamiya said.

She plans to go on that ride for at least 15 times since she had a wristband, which allowed her unlimited rides for the day.

Catherine Ray, mother of four, brings her children every year to the fair and has attended the fair herself for as long as she can remember.

“My kids look forward to it every year and it’s a family tradition,” Ray said.

Her grandparents are members of the Lions Club, so her family supports the fair each year.

Although the rides are a large draw for the fair, a new concession addition has been a crowd-pleaser as well.

“The big hit this week is the deep fried Snickers or Twinkies,” said Ashley Noerper, concession owner.

Creating either food is quite a process, which Noerper and her staff have perfected.

“You’ve got to freeze the Snicker or Twinkie, that’s the trick,” Noerper said. “Then you dip it in a funnel cake mix and then you fry it. It’s like a funnel cake with a Snickers in the center. Then you put powder sugar and syrup on top. I call it a heart attack on a stick. It is very good, but I think one should be anybody’s limit.”

The fair will be open at Lions Club Fair Park until Saturday.
